Julia Violich is the type of coach girls respond to, listen to, and work hard for. Still a competitive mountain biker herself, Julia leads by wisdom, knowledge, example, and a personal touch. Recently, she joined Bear Development Team to coach the new girl’s team. The Bear Development philosophy focuses not only on the racing but the development of the girls as well- rounded individuals. Julia believes sports are not just about competition but also about forming positive values and building character. She takes the time to know the girls she coaches in both an athletic and personal way. She talks with the girls before and after their mountain bike training rides. Her ability to listen helps the girls to know that she cares. Julia is enthusiastic and upbeat. Her positive and inclusive approach help the girls with group camaraderie in her teams. Coaches, such as Julia, who have a more positive approach, explain the details, and take the time to know their female athletes beyond the sport are the coaches likely to bring out success in sport for girls. Her Philosophy consists of: “It’s not just about riding and racing – it’s about making good choices for school and jobs.” Just remember with girl athletes, the devil is in the details.
