After a discouraging all losing season, the girls of San Rafael High’s Varsity Basketball team were needing a different perspective. I was quite lucky to touch base with coach C.J. Healy. We tossed around a few emails, I offered to come in to come in pro bono to talk with the girls next season, then C.J. got the bright idea to have me come in for a short talk with the girls the day before their game against Terra Linda. They had a slim chance to win this game. Although somewhat quiet, I watched the girls eyes looking at me directly and all listening intently. Our focus was on winning words, positive thoughts, creating a strength phrase, and finally reminding them persistence and determination are critical to success. Through all this I emphasized the importance of being positive. When the girls were asked what their motivation was on a scale of one to ten, one of the big brown eyed girls yelled out 25. She led the way for all the girls motivation to grow.
The next day, I sent a brief email to C.J. asking her to let me know how the girls had done. Her response, “We won! We won by a lot! The girls were on fire!” C.J. talked on about the miraculous transformation and winning by 35 points. The girls persisted, gained a different perspective, and the power of being positive. Congratulations, girls of San Rafael Varsity basketball. May this lesson stay with you.
