For the second year in a row, I will be running a 3-day race in Nepal to support the Nepal orphanage, Freedom Children’s Welfare Center (FCWC). In 2010, my husband (JP) and I came across this orphanage when we were trekking with Pancha Tamang’s trekking company, Destination Nepal. We were looking for a charity to support and learned about FCWC from Pancha.
The orphanage is located in Kathmandu, Nepal. Last year we brought books, pencils, pads, crayons, pens, stickers, other stationery goods and cash… Last year, the children had big smiles as we opened boxes of books for them. Angyil, the five year old greeter, pulled out a photo book of mountain animals and brought it over to me. We viewed snow leopards, tahrs, Himalayan wolves, and Tibetan bears. This year, JP and I will come a week early to spend time with the children, bringing t shirts, writing materials, and other stationery. We will also stay a day after the race to discuss future needs and say goodbye.
Nepal Action Asia’s 3 day ultra marathon 2012 will be held from November 3-5 starting in Kathmandu and transporting us to the beginning of the race on Friday, November 2. The location remains a mystery to us. Although, I’ve heard rumors that it may be in the Mansasalu area of Nepal. JP will be volunteering and I will be running the course. Last year, I learned many particulars of the race which were never clear beforehand. First of all, we need to plan on rising at 4:00 am for the 5:00 am daily start. During the race and four days, only water will be provided; otherwise food is for sale on the trail or you can bring your own on your back or fanny pack. The course will be steep and challenging; despite the fact they are advertising a more runnable route this year. The terrain will be spectacular. There will be views of the towering snow covered Himalyan Mountains running through villages where we will meet the locals. Sometimes a bit shy, it only takes a small greeting directed to the Nepalis to bring out smiles. Both JP and I are looking forward to contributing to FCWC and participating in the race again.
